The Insider’s Guide

How to hire an SEO company — and avoid getting burned

More than 75% of our clients came to us after being burned by another agency. Not because they made a careless decision — but because the SEO industry makes it easy to look legitimate without delivering anything real. Offshore agencies with U.S. phone numbers. Guarantees that don’t hold up. Reports full of vanity metrics that never translate to a single new customer.

We’ve been in this business since 2012. We’ve seen every version of the pitch. So before you sign anything with us — or anyone else — here are the seven things you should check.

Check #1

Read third-party reviews — not just the ones on their website

Any agency can publish glowing testimonials on their own site. What matters is what people say on platforms the agency doesn’t control — Google, Yelp, Bing, Facebook. If the reviews only exist on the agency’s website and can’t be traced to a verified third-party source, treat them as unverified.

The red flag: Testimonials with no link, no full name, no company, and no way to verify.

How CWDSC measures up: We have 70+ verified reviews across Google, Yelp, and Facebook — every one of them linked, named, and publicly visible. We don’t publish testimonials on this site that can’t be independently verified. You can read every review right now before you ever talk to us.

Check #2

Be skeptical of “instant results” and “page one guarantees”

Ranking a website for its own brand name is easy. It looks impressive in a sales presentation — “look, you’re on page one!” — but if the only people searching your company name are existing customers, it generates zero new business. Real SEO means ranking for the terms your buyers actually search before they know your name exists.

Anyone promising page one rankings in 30 days is either targeting keywords nobody searches, or using tactics that work briefly and then get your site penalized.

The red flag: Guaranteed rankings, instant results, or page one promises with no explanation of which keywords or how.

How CWDSC measures up: We ranked our own agency for some of the most competitive SEO keywords in Chicago — “Chicago SEO company,” “SEO services Chicago,” “best SEO company Chicago” — before we made that claim to a single client. You found us by searching one of those terms. That’s not a guarantee we make — it’s a result we already delivered, on ourselves, in one of the hardest markets in the country to rank in.

Check #3

Check how many reviews they have — and how recent they are

An agency with 3 reviews and a founding date of 2015 has a problem. Either they’re not asking for reviews — which suggests they’re not confident in their work — or clients aren’t happy enough to leave them. Overseas agencies and fly-by-night operations are especially prone to thin review profiles because they rebrand frequently to escape their history.

The red flag: Fewer than 20 reviews, no reviews in the past 12 months, or reviews that all appeared in the same 2-week window.

How CWDSC measures up: We’ve been collecting reviews consistently since 2012. Our Google and Yelp profiles show a steady, organic review history across 15 years — not a burst campaign designed to inflate a number before a sales call. The dates, names, and content are all publicly visible.

Check #4

Make sure they have a real merchant account

Agencies that only accept PayPal, Venmo, Stripe, or wire transfers as payment methods are worth scrutinizing. These platforms require minimal verification to set up and are easy to abandon when things go wrong. A legitimate agency with real infrastructure accepts credit cards through a merchant account — because they’ve been vetted by a bank.

The red flag: No credit card processing, or insistence on payment methods that offer no buyer protection.

How CWDSC measures up: We accept all major credit cards through a fully verified merchant account. We’ve processed client payments this way since 2012. If you ever have a billing dispute, you have full credit card protection — something no PayPal-only agency can offer you.

Check #5

“Results take time” is true — but it’s also the most abused phrase in SEO

Legitimate SEO does take time. Google isn’t fooled by shortcuts, and sustainable page one rankings are built over months, not days. Every honest agency will tell you this — and so will every dishonest one, because it gives them cover to underdeliver indefinitely while collecting your monthly retainer.

Google Knowledge base on SEO

The difference is what happens alongside “results take time.” Are you getting monthly reports that show actual ranking movement? Are specific keywords tracked? Is there a documented strategy with milestones? Or is “results take time” the only answer you ever get?

The red flag: Vague monthly reports, no keyword tracking, no documented roadmap, and “give it more time” as the response to every question.

How CWDSC measures up: Every client gets a documented 90-day roadmap before work begins, monthly ranking reports showing keyword-by-keyword movement across Google, Google Maps, Bing, and Yahoo, and direct access to our team when they have questions. You’ll never wonder what we did last month or whether it’s working — the data is in your inbox every 30 days.

Check #6

Watch out for the “perfect offer”

No contracts. No risk. Instant results. Guaranteed rankings. Page one in 30 days. Done-for-you simplicity. If an agency’s pitch hits every single thing you were hoping to hear, slow down. Scammers and low-performing agencies have learned exactly what decision-makers want to be told — and they lead with all of it to push a fast close before you have time to think.

A legitimate agency will tell you what they can and can’t do, how long things realistically take, and what success looks like in your specific market. That conversation isn’t always comfortable — but it’s the one that protects your investment.

The red flag: A pitch with no caveats, no realistic timeline, and pressure to sign quickly.

How CWDSC measures up: We start every engagement with a free audit that tells you exactly where you stand, what’s realistic for your market, and what it will take to get there. We don’t do long-term contracts because we don’t need to — our average client relationship is measured in years, not months, because the results keep coming. If we’re not the right fit for your business we’ll tell you that in the first call.

Check #7

Demand proof that’s actually verifiable

Showing you one or two sites on page one of Google proves almost nothing. You don’t know if the agency did the SEO or inherited it from a previous firm. You don’t know how long it took, what keywords they targeted, or whether those rankings generate any actual leads. Screenshots can be manipulated. Rankings for obscure low-competition keywords are easy to achieve and meaningless for your business.

Real proof is documented, specific, and includes metrics you can verify independently — ranking reports with dates, Google Analytics data, call tracking records, and named clients you can contact.

The red flag: Vague “here’s a site we ranked” proof with no dates, no keyword specifics, and no client contact information.

How CWDSC measures up: Every case study on our site includes the client name, the specific keywords targeted, the rankings achieved, and in most cases the business outcome — leads generated, cost per lead, percentage increase in qualified traffic. Our clients are real businesses you can look up and verify. And our own agency rankings for Chicago SEO terms are publicly visible in Google right now — no screenshots required.

The Bottom Line

The agency that can pass every one of these tests is the one worth hiring.

We wrote this guide because we’ve watched too many good businesses waste months and thousands of dollars on agencies that couldn’t pass a single one. We pass all seven. We can prove it. And if after reading this you want a straight second opinion on your current SEO situation — no pitch, no pressure — we’ll give you one for free.
